Nonstop Market Changes: New Balance of Export and Consumption
02/02/2023

In conditions of transformation of global markets, Russian fish industries turn to new areas of export supplies. Not only restrictions on the part of European countries, but also a change in the structure of world consumption of fish products forced them to look for solutions to maintain the profitability of fishing. Although the domestic market remains the priority of the fisheries complex, an increase in export potential is an indispensable condition for its stable development. The updated schedule of global industry exhibitions will greatly simplify the solution of this tasks.

Changes in the structure of exports

The events of recent years have had a significant impact on the export structure of Russian fishing and fishing companies. Many familiar directions have not yet completely restored, others have become inaccessible due to sanctions. According to expert estimates, export to Europe for last year has been reduced more than doubled. The supplies of pollock and other white fish caught by Russian fishermen and processed in China were also under threat. In addition to already introduced restrictions, long-term planning is prevented by the lack of stable forecasts in this direction. The reorientation to the domestic market helped to compensate for part of the costs of Russian fish priorities. However, the growth rate of fish consumption in Russia is still insufficient to make up for income falling due to new restrictions.

At the same time, the aggravated food crisis helps to increase interest in Russian fish products. The structure of world trade also changes. The share of worldwide fish consumption by the countries of the Asia-Pacific region is already about 60% and continues to increase. Against the backdrop of demographic changes, the countries of the Middle East and Africa also express interest. The markets of Latin America are also interested in fish and seafood from Russian North and Pacific Ocean. Fishing and aquaculture not completely cover their need.

Russian domestic market

For several years, the Russian fisheries complex has carried out significant investments in the modernization of the fleet and production capacities. Consumers also have become accustomed to high -quality products: white fish fillets and seafood, which supplied from the Far East to the central regions. New lines of fish products appear for the younger generation that is far from old culinary traditions. Instead, they were offered a product corresponding to their behavior habits: Ready-to-Cook, Ready-to-Eat - and the matter went.

Understanding the significance of domestic consumption, participants of the supply chain also invested in the infrastructure of logistics and storage: from the modernization of port terminals to setting up a continuous refrigeration chain, which allows to maintain freshness and consumer properties of products. Systematic work affects the commissioning of new refrigerated wagons and containers, the modernization of the transport fleet, the revival of consumer habits. The disclosure of full potential takes time, since these long -term processes cannot be forced only in connection with the current conjuncture. For the dynamics of growth and stable prices, it is very important to maintain profitability today and not to miss the opportunity to respond to consumer requests in the whole world.

New centers of attraction of the global fish industry

New global trends lead to the loss of the leading role of international exhibitions in Europe and the USA.The main reasons are the insufficient flexibility of these exhibitions to participants and consumers from developing countries, the continuing destruction of established logistics chains and a low degree of response to newly emerging risks. As a result, the old centers of attraction of the global fishing industry could not provide effective solutions to overcome the global crisis of the fish market, which began during the pandemic period and intensified as a result of the followed economic transformations. The mechanisms that would allow to stabilize the trade balance in the world and adapt to the changed situation have not yet been developed.

The main task of international industry events today is to ensure the restoration and further development of the global fish market. The achievement of this goal is possible only taking into account the interests of all participants of the industry and consumers around the world. In such conditions, the value of exhibitions, which, first of all, are focused on the markets of the Asia-Pacific region and other developing countries is increasing. The main ones will take place this year from October to December.
